Heroic Scale Miniatures Marble Bases

What we're aiming for:

What you'll need:

  1. Ruler & pencil
  2. 0.020 inch thick sheet of craft polystyrene
  3. Air brush or paint cans (black, white, gold)
  4. Used makeup wipes or dried Clorox wipes (something fibrous)
  5. Plastic glue
  6. Plastic snips
  7. Exacto knife

(If you're using Clorox wipes, place them somewhere they can dry. They'll need to be completely dry for use.)

Lets start with the Polystyrene. giant Using the ruler, measure out 4mm x 4mm squares and cut them out with the Exacto knife. giant I cut long ways first, then took my time and cut the short way. Go slow; marble should have a clean edge. giant

Take the squares and place them on the bases. I personally did not make each one centered, keeping the center joint away from the middle of the base for a more natural look. giant giant

Using a pair of plastic snips, cut off the majority of the excess overhanging polystyrene. Using the Exacto knife, hold the blade against the edge of the base and slowly turn the base to "peel" or shave off the rest of the polystyrene and shape it to the edge of the base. giant If you have stands, attach the base to the stand. giant

I used Clorox wipes, but they are not the easiest to work with, as the fibers tend to break. I found pinching two parts with a thumbs width between and rotating it like a crack with a little force would loosen up the fibers to not break. The goal is to create a mesh of fibers to trap the paint.

Base coat the bases black once you have a few sections of loosened fibers.

(The Clorox wipe ripped a few times till I got a good handle of how much force I could apply) giant

Once the black paint is dry, place the wipe tightly over the base and spray with gold. giant

Wait for the gold to dry. If you're using the same wipe for the white paint, make sure you do not rub it onto the base. Cover the base again and apply white. giant

There will be small fiber strands stuck on the base. You can pull them up and off. Apply black to the rim and between the edges of the marble and you're finished.

Ready for any royal miniature.
