# RTS Storyline Notes

This document records worldbuilding ideas that should guide campaign writing,
faction design, art direction, unit naming, and future mission concepts.

## World Premise

The world is shaped by cultures that write power into reality. Magic is not an
abstract energy that looks the same for every race. It comes through special
writing, and each race's writing system reveals its deepest values.

Dwarfs chisel power into the world through runes. Elves write power through
fluid, cursive marks tied to air, motion, and cloud. The difference between
scripts should be visible in story, spell effects, architecture, relics, UI
icons, and faction identity.

## Dwarfs

Dwarfs are a hearty, very strong race with a reputation for being grumpy but
honorable. They are clean, disciplined people who work in earth and stone
without being defined by grime. Mining, carving, building, and metalwork are
central to their culture, but their kingdoms are not deep underground kingdoms.

Dwarf civilization rises at the peaks of mountains. Their great castle forts
stand open to the sky on high stone crowns, exposed to storms, snow, wind, and
thunder. Their halls may cut into rock, and their mines may reach downward, but
their power is displayed upward: battlements, terraces, high gates, cliff roads,
signal fires, and open courtyards above the clouds.

Dwarfs quarry most of their stone and building materials from the earth,
hewing them out of vast ravines, quarry chasms, and split mountain seams. What
they take from below they raise high: that stone is stacked into towering holds,
stepped ziggurats, and great towers, and into kingdoms crowning or carved into
the mountain itself. The dwarf town hall embodies this — a watchfire tower or a
good-sized ziggurat that grows taller and grander as a hold advances through its
technology tiers, until at its height it becomes a grand mountain kingdom seat.
Dwarfs do dig below the surface as well, but the deep is mostly for storage,
resource stockpiles, and quarters for the poorer dwarfs; the proud, sunlit holds
above remain the face of the kingdom.

Their common symbols are thunder and earth. Thunder represents judgment, royal
power, warning, and the voice of the peaks. Earth represents endurance, craft,
law, ancestry, and obligation.

### Dwarf Culture

Dwarfs value:

- honor
- clan duty
- kingdom loyalty
- craft mastery
- strength
- endurance
- clean work
- old law
- practical beauty
- oaths that last

They have clans and multiple kingdoms. A dwarf's clan or kingdom should be shown
through a controlled accent color, heraldic mark, beard ring, shield device,
wax seal, or rune pattern. The main dwarf cultural colors are white, blue, and
dark brown, with clan or kingdom colors added as a third or fourth identifier.

The first royal line is the High King kingdom, marked by purple and gold. These
colors should feel ancient and authoritative rather than decorative. Purple
belongs to law, royal ceremony, mountain majesty, and old oaths. Gold belongs to
kingship, treasure, sunlit peaks, oath value, and the visible right to command.
Together they form the primary royal dwarf identity, while ordinary materials
remain stone, iron, leather, chainmail, white cloth, and dark mountain browns.

Long beards are culturally important, especially among older dwarfs. Beards can
show age, profession, rank, family, vows, and wartime role.

Candles on helmets are a recurring dwarf image. They began as practical mining
lights, but also became symbols of watch duty, craft focus, and oath flame.

Town halls and hold halls carry same symbolism at building scale. Their window
lamps and braziers are not mere decoration: they mark live musters, watch duty,
craft activity, and distress visible across ridge roads when a hall is under
attack.

### Dwarf Warfare

Dwarfs usually fight in chainmail, half plate, heavy leather, and reinforced
work gear. Their preferred weapons are warhammers, axes, picks, polehammers,
crossbows, and shields. Sword use is rare and should feel culturally unusual.

Known dwarf unit identities:

- Miner: worker, builder, harvester, practical mountain laborer.
- Shield Guard: armored defender and front-line soldier.
- Crossbowman: compact ranged soldier with engineered weaponry.
- Rune Smith: magic user who works through carved script, tools, flame, and
  inscription.

## Dwarf Magic

Dwarf magic is runic script. It is chiseled, carved, stamped, engraved, sealed,
and struck into being. A dwarf does not simply cast a spell; a dwarf inscribes
an obligation into stone, metal, wax, weapon, armor, or air made briefly solid by
thunder.

Runic magic should feel deliberate and weighty. It is tied to:

- stone
- metal
- thunder
- oaths
- ancestry
- craft law
- mountain kingship
- fortified places

Rune Smiths are not soft scholars. They are craft-priests, engineers, judges,
and battle artisans. Their tools may include chisels, hammers, wax, tablets,
metal strips, slate, rune stones, and candle flame.

## Goblins

Goblins are tunnel-raiders, salvage clans, camp followers, cutters, sappers,
fungus keepers, and border opportunists. They are not a noble kingdom like the
dwarfs and not a graceful high culture like the elves. Their societies gather
around tunnel mouths, scrap dens, watch pits, raider camps, and crude halls
built from hide, broken timber, scavenged metal, and whatever can be carried
away after a fight.

Goblins should feel dangerous and disciplined enough to raid in numbers, but
they are not parade soldiers. Their order comes from fear, appetite, and the
authority of chieftains, shamans, bomb-makers, and whoever controls food,
fungus, salvage, or the nearest defensible tunnel.

Their culture should read as:

- opportunistic
- wiry and quick
- smoke-stained and half-industrial
- practical with salvage
- comfortable with cramped tunnels, ambush paths, and bad ground
- more interested in what can be stolen, stripped, burned, or repurposed than
  in permanence

Goblin settlements should imply repeated movement and rebuilding. Stakes, rope,
hide awnings, scavenged armor plates, crude warning signs, fungus lamps, and
totem bundles should do more visual work than polished masonry or finished
joinery.

### Goblin Warfare

Goblin warfare should contrast with dwarf warfare. Dwarfs form stubborn lines
and hold ground; goblins jab, swarm, ambush, sling, torch, and slip through bad
terrain. Their camps should feel like launching points for raids rather than
civilized seats of power.

Known goblin unit identities for the current prototype slice:

- Scavenger: worker, looter, tunnel laborer, and filthy-handed builder.
- Stabber: cheap melee raider with scrap shield and knife or cleaver.
- Slinger: ranged harasser carrying stone pouches and a practical sling.
- Shaman: smoke, fungus, bones, soot signs, and curse-fetish caster.

Expanded side-race identities planned in the backlog:

- Brute
- Sapper
- Raider
- Chieftain
- Siege crew

## Goblin Magic

Goblin magic should still obey the world's writing rule, but it is not carved
law like dwarf runes and not flowing script like elf cursive. Goblin writing is
rough, fast, and uneasy: scored marks in wood, soot signs on hide, knotted
charms, cut tally sticks, nail-scratched warning glyphs, and bone fetishes hung
in bunches.

This gives goblin shamanism a distinct identity:

- notched tunnel signs
- ash and soot hand marks
- bone bundles and knot cords
- warning stakes with repeated cut marks
- fungus-smoke sigils
- branded charms lashed to staves, masks, or shields

Goblin magic should feel risky, improvised, and communal rather than refined.
It binds fear, luck, hunger, smoke, tunnels, vermin, and bad bargains into
short-lived power.

## Elves

Elves are tall and strongly associated with plains, air, and cloud castles. Most
of the race lives above the clouds in elevated castles or cloudborne kingdoms.
A lower caste lives on the plains below and harvests food for the upper cloud
society.

This creates a built-in social divide: sky-dwelling elves live in height,
beauty, air, and distance, while plains elves handle food, soil, weather risk,
and contact with the ground. This class split should be important to future elf
stories.

Elf culture should contrast sharply with dwarf culture. Where dwarfs are broad,
angular, carved, and oath-bound, elves are tall, flowing, cursive, airborne, and
graceful. Where dwarfs crown mountain peaks with stone forts, elves suspend or
raise their society into cloud castles above open plains.

## Elf Magic

Elf magic is cursive and fluid. It should look like script formed from wind,
cloud, silk, light, or moving grass. Their writing is not chiseled into matter
but carried through motion.

This gives elves a clear magical identity:

- flowing spell marks
- long curves
- air trails
- cloud glyphs
- ribbon-like inscriptions
- graceful handwritten forms

## Cultural Contrast

The strongest faction contrast so far:

- Dwarfs write by chiseling. Elves write by flowing.
- Dwarfs build on mountain peaks. Elves live in cloud castles and plains.
- Dwarfs are broad, armored, and grounded. Elves are tall, light, and airborne.
- Dwarfs use thunder and earth. Elves use air, cloud, plains, and motion.
- Dwarfs express clan through solid heraldry. Elves may express caste or house
  through flowing script, cloth, banners, or cloud marks.

## Open Story Threads

- How many dwarf kingdoms exist, and which one begins the campaign?
- Is the player directly serving the purple-and-gold High King, or commanding a
  sworn border clan under that royal banner?
- Are helmet candles sacred, practical, military, or all three?
- Why are goblins threatening the dwarf border in the current campaign?
- What political relationship exists between mountain dwarfs and cloud elves?
- Do plains elves resent cloud elves?
- Can magic script be read by other races, or is each script culturally locked?
- What happens when dwarf runes and elf cursive magic are combined or opposed?
- Why is sword use rare among dwarfs?
- What makes thunder sacred to dwarf kingship?

## The Curse of:
#### "That would be cool"

There's a slew of terms, scope creep, project bloat, drift, bells and whistles and so on; most carry the same miasma around them, the loss of control of a project. 

But with reality, it's always a little more complicated.

Every game (and most projects) start with the feeling of excitement, the pristine clean clarity of only forward as there is no backward step. Possibilities abound, even with a narrow defined scope, as there's so many nuances to every aspect of what must take place to achieve the end goal. 

It is a good time and a great feeling. 

But as time ticks forward and time is put into a project, we move down the journey of a project; possibilities narrow a design decisions take shape, increasing the work required to go back and change. The walls on the sides of journey change from being built out of scope and adherence to a plan, to thicker intractably menacing walls of inertia.

Momentum of a project will keep a project moving in a direction, even if change might be for the better. When working on a major project, hearing "that would be cool" will keep you up. 

Additional scope, unplanned changes, "new direction", all apart of "that would be cool."

As i work on TrekSplat, I often think of "that would be cool" if this thing did that, or this system needs to be implemented at this moment. Thousands ideas from the era of project start will replay for me all of these grand interlocking systems. But as time progresses, the walls along to journeys(project) end change from made of design docs and scope to the intractability of inertia.

I have found when i suffer from the curse of "that would be cool", i temper it by writing down the idea and how it benefits the game and as inertia carries be down the path, i look for where i can make doors in the walls around me.
